Elon University classes canceled, snow day commences

Elon University canceled all classes on Tuesday, Feb. 17. The snow on late Monday in the area froze over causing unsafe road conditions

Classes were originally delayed until 10 a.m., then pushed back again until 12 p.m. When Gov. Pat McCroy of North Carolina urged drivers to stay off the roads in areas affected by inclement weather early Tuesday morning, classes were canceled to ensure safety.

A wave of relief hit campus when the email was sent out. Many that lived off campus, were worried they would not be able to make their classes.

“I don’t live too far off campus, but my driveway is a steep hill,” junior Tyler Meacham said. “I don’t see how it would have been safe to walk or drive to class.”

Sophomore Maggie Hakas, a resident of North Carolina, was nervous because of the snowy conditions.

“North Carolina just isn’t equipped for this kind of weather,” Hakas said. “We don’t have the right snow plows, sand or preparation to navigate the snow.”

Despite the cancelation, services and events will still be held. Admission sessions will still be held as schedule and the Mardi Gras Celebration will be at 5:30 p.m. in McBride Gathering Room. Campus Recreation, Moseley Center, Health Services, and Belk Library will be open. To get food, students can go to Acorn, Colonnades, or Lakeside until 8 p.m.
